Summer Book Recommendations 2019

Summer is upon us, my friend, which means there might actually be time for reading *le gasp*. So here I am with 7 books that I think would be worth reading.

All the fluffy

To me, summer speaks of fluffy contemporary novels with some romance thrown in – you know, some feel-good books. The first three titles I have could be just that for you.

The Boy Who Steals Houses

1

The Boy Who Steals Houses may be fluffy at first sight, but it’s actually a roller coaster of emotions and angst and poor anxious boys. It’s a genderbent Goldilocks retelling with caramel brownies, autistic representation, and a rowdy family! What could be better for a summer read?

The Thing With Feathers

3

To start off with, The Thing With Feathers has poetry, epilepsy representation, and a house by the beach. It’s a romance novel, but it’s clean. I’d recommend this for a short plane flight.

Out of the ordinary

These next two aren’t your average contemporaries. One of them isn’t even set in modern day. Although they may be aimed for younger readers, I did enjoy these books in the past and they make for good reads on road trips.

Savvy

4

Savvy is a middle grade novel where several special families have savvies – or you could call them powers, I suppose. From hurricanes to mind reading, Savvy contains the spirit of wonder and adventure while being completely genuine and full of heart.

Ruby Redfort series

5

Ruby Redfort is a 6-book series about a girl who is recruited by a secret agency for her skill in cracking codes and solving crime. Not gonna lie, the series starts off light but by the final book, things are incredibly tense (and it’s when you realize the true connection you have with the characters). Is it fluffy? Probably not. But is it fun? Absolutely.

The rainy days

The last three books I have are ones that may serve to inspire thought long after the stories are over and done. These may be familiar titles, but they’re still good.

Wuthering Heights

6

Whoa, okay. What’s a classic doing here? Okay, this classic is here because it’s a good classic. Wuthering Heights is a long journey – it’s disturbing, it’s frightening, but it’s captivating. Still, despite how dark it is, it remains something to pick up when you’re free.

The Hate U Give

7

The Hate U Give isn’t an easy read. It’s slow, it’s questionable in some places, and you’ll either end up loving or hating it. I’m not quite sure what to think of it myself. This is a book that explores racism and the voice you have to offer, topics I think are both relevant and needed. Read it, and see what you think afterwards.

Dear Evan Hansen – the Novel

8

Those who are familiar with the newer shows on Broadway and West End will recognize Dear Evan Hansen, but now as a novel. I’ve never seen the show myself, so I can’t compare it to the book, but it hooked me and wouldn’t let me go until the ending. Warning: this deals with the subject of teen suicide, depression, and drugs, so if you want to stay away from that, I won’t blame you. However, if you’ve listened to the soundtrack, it might be a good idea to get your hands on this one.

That’s it!

These are all my book recommendations for summer 2019! Have you read some of these before? What did you think of them? Will you be picking up any of these titles any time soon?

Let me know in the comments below!

All the best,
