*SPOILERS*
I’m back from another round of “Germaine takes notes in a movie theater”. To celebrate Women’s Day and the release of the MCU’s Captain Marvel, I’ll be walking through my thoughts on this movie with a focus on its female characters and what they tell us about women.
Prepare for heavy sarcasm.
Women naturally have perfect hair.
Every time our main character Carol Danvers walks into a battle, flies to places, and escapes from tense situations, her hair is perfect. Even when she’s a mess, she looks good. Because clearly, that reflects real life. As a female, I wake up every morning with amazing hair and I barely have to touch it before I’m out the door for school. Need to be somewhere special? No issue, I’ll just shake out my luscious waves and be outside in a couple of minutes.
Fashion and women go together.
This time, it’s not just about Carol. When Minn-Erva dives into battle, I noticed she’d taken the time to put on some lipstick. But I mean, that’s hardly surprising. Every girl I know puts on makeup before she enters a stressful situation. This is such an accurate portrayal of women. You know what, I even keep a spare makeup kit on me at all times because you never know when you need to put on some eyeshadow before punching someone in the face. It’s like war paint, you know?
Women don’t get tired. It’s just not a thing.
You heard it. In her eponymous movie, Carol fights off like, I don’t know, a bunch of missiles and destroys them all before they hit earth. That’s pretty impressive… but as you already know, females just have great physical strength and endurance. We fight battles on a regular basis, so we tend to build up some endurance there.
Women treasure their gal pals.
I couldn’t find a sarcastic way to put this, so I’m just going to be straight with you. I loved the relationship between Carol and Maria. It was just really strong and I loved how they were still friends after six years apart. I also thought Carol’s relationship with Maria’s daughter, Monica, was adorable and hey, it shows that adults and kids can get along.
Back to you!
Okay, in all seriousness I did actually enjoy the film. I loved the characters and the storyline, and I thought overall it was pretty *coughs* marvelous (sorry that was terrible) but if you didn’t like me poking fun at the movie then I apologize for that.
Have you seen Captain Marvel yet? If so, what are your thoughts on it? What do you think about the female representation in the film?
