I’m a creative person, and I don’t like to limit myself to just one art like writing. Whether you enjoy being creative or just need a break from writing, here are a couple of things you could do to refresh yourself and have fun.
By no means is this a complete list! There are so many other activities you could do to channel your inner artist.
Visual Art
Art
Just because you don’t think you’re good at art doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy it. Like with many skills, talents, or hobbies, you get better at it the more you do it. No one’s going to see your doodle of a dinosaur if you don’t want to. Draw anything that comes to mind, or print out a coloring page and spend some time playing with your colored pencils.
It doesn’t even have to be 2D art. If you’re into sculpting, whether with metal or wood or clay, do that. If you want to learn, take classes or stay at home and teach yourself. Art is subjective, so you’re free to do anything you like.
Photography & Videography
Another artistic skill you could enjoy doing is playing with a camera. I like taking pictures, putting together vlogs, and capturing moments in time. You don’t have to own an expensive camera to do photography — whatever you have is fine. And if you want to go the extra mile, download a free photo editing app (Snapseed, PicsArt, VSCO, etc.) and take your photos to the next level. As for editing videos, iMovie on Apple is pretty decent, and I personally love Shotcut on Windows (though it has a steep-ish learning curve).
Theater
I recently found out that I have a major weakness for theater — especially musical theater. I think that it’s magical and exciting… I just love it. I’ve recently been able to be more involved in school productions (even if they’re only small parts) and I’ve had a blast in all of them. Last year, I was fortunate enough to be able to see a West End production of Matilda, and let me tell you, seeing professional shows live like that is amazing.
If you haven’t been involved in some form of drama yet, I highly recommend trying it out, even if it’s just a part in a skit one of your friends wrote. Maybe you’ll enjoy it, maybe you won’t. What matters is that you gave it a shot anyway π
Music
The thing about music is that you have to find what truly floats your boat. I played the piano for over six years and I still have no passion for it. I do, however, enjoy singing as well as playing the ukulele.
The nice thing about learning one instrument is that you can transfer a lot of the skills you’ve learned or apply much of your already-known music theory to another instrument. So sit down and learn an instrument (take classes if you can afford them!) or teach yourself to play a song that you’ve been loving lately. Take the time to enjoy yourself.
Dance
Dance can be an interesting thing to explore if you want to be more active or just want to try something you’re unfamiliar with. There are many, many styles and types of dancing so you have a good number of options to start from. If you’re feeling particularly ambitious, call a friend and ask them to be your partner for a waltz or a swing dance. Again, you’ve got a lot of choices π
Cook / Bake
The nice thing about cooking or baking is that your efforts are rewarded by a (hopefully) delicious snack or meal. Home-cooked food is special simply because you made it and because you can adjust recipes to your taste (it’s practically custom made food, right? XP).
If you’re tired, you could always make something simple like brownies or granola bars. Sometimes it’s just easier to follow instructions rather than create a recipe from scratch, you know?
That’s all for now!
Aside from writing, what other hobbies or arts are you into? Are you a creative person, or someone who prefers other things like athletics or research? Let me know in the comments below!
